For animals at the top of the food chain, like this Great Egret (Ardea
alba), hunting for prey is a constant priority. But in habitats such as the
Florida wetlands, prey is plentiful, almost any small critter can become a
meal, and as a top predator, the risk of getting eaten yourself is low. For
an animal in the middle of the chain, however, like this bullfrog, pressure
comes from both sides. You need to be active enough to catch prey, yes, but
not so exposed that you fall prey yourself. Egrets and herons are skilled
hunters, and when they grab a prey animal, its chances are slim to
none...but this frog fought and kicked and managed to escape the jaws of
death! Upon looking at the photos, he was speared and likely injured, but
his escape was nonetheless miraculous!
